Boxy Charm July 2019 Review

BoxyCharm July 2019

Back from my trip and getting a bit of a slow start today but I did have a lot of fun. Completely ignored my diet but I had enough fun ai will willingly deal with the consequences. Moving on, before I left my Boxy Charm came in so I was able to use the products over the weekend.

Boxy Charm has been one of my favorite subscription boxes for a while.  It is a $21/ month (23.05 w/ tax for some) box.  It is billed to your account on the 1st of the month, ships between the 6th -10th and contains five full sized products.

This month the first thing I pulled out of the box was an Elemis Superfood Vital Veggie Mask (retail $35). I’ve tried a few products from Elemis before and for the most part liked them.  My issue with them is always the scent.  This was no exception.  I know people say it smells green and healthy.  Personally, I think it smells like the plant food my mom used to put in her African Violets when I was a kid.  It has that sort of scent to it.

Scent aside, I did like this product. Most of the masks I’ve been using recently have clay in them and it tends to be harder to remove.  This was super easy.  You apply a thin layer and then after about 20 minutes you wipe off the excess with a damp washcloth.  My skin was nice and soft after.  As a note, you really have to make sure you wipe it all off though as your face will feel sticky if you leave any of the product on.

The second item I pulled out of my box was the Alamar Cosmetics Mother of Pearl Gloss. (retail $10). It has a slight tint to it, but not much color at all, it is just slightly shimmery.  It is not sticky in the least and the gloss smelled like pineapples, which I liked. All in all not bad.  I’m not much of a gloss person and I’m not so fond of the glittery lips, so it probably won’t get a whole lot of use but I will toss it in my bag and use it every now and again.  I wasn’t too excited by it, but it is a good product.

Next, I extracted an Appeal Gel liner in the shade Deep Taupe (retail $21). It is exactly the same as the liner I got in my June Lip Monthly bag, right down to the color, so I left it sealed and will be passing it along to someone else. It is a good liner and can be used for both eyes and lips which is nice.  It is an extremely smooth and long lasting formula. I still think $21 is too much for a liner in general though. So as nice as it is I would never purchase it on my own.

Next, I pulled out the Luxie Gaea three piece brush set (retail $30).  Luxie brushes are always good quality with no loose bristles and well-made handles, at least the ones I’ve gotten.  Of the three, two are brushes I will use, the third is a brush of a type I just don’t use.  I always like having extra brushes around because that means I can rotate them out and go longer without cleaning them.  I need to sit down and do a mass brush cleaning actually. I tend to rotate the clean ones forward in the holder, sigh heavily when there are no more clean ones and then sit down to a mass cleaning while promising myself that next time I won’t leave it so long. Which is a promise I consistently break. Anyway…

my admittedly bad swatches of the Butter London palette

The final item and the one I was most excited by was the Butter London Natural Goddess Eyeshadow Palette (retail $32).  I love their mascara and I was really looking forward to this.  The shades are nice and the formula is really good.  It is soft and super easy to blend.  It also stays put.  Even my shimmery shades didn’t migrate. My big complaint would be that there are only two matte shades and the others are shimmery.  I would have liked one more matte and one less shimmer. Also even though it is a very nice shade, I won’t be wearing the blue eyeshadow.  I like the pop of color, but I just can’t wear blue eyeshadow.  I think I was just traumatized by the 1980s. I will be reaching often for the warm brown shade in this palette though (Temptress).  I can easily see that being my go to for quite a while.

All in all I was really happy with this month’s box. The products were nice and had a total of $128 value which is pretty good for a $21 box. While I will be passing along the gel liner and probably won’t get a lot of use out of the lip gloss, (and one brush) I will use the mask, two of the brushes and the eyeshadow palette.  Last month in the Boxy Charm vs. Ipsy Glam Bag Plus, Ipsy took the win.  This month I think Boxy might take the title.  My ipsy bag will be coming in later this week so I will have to hold off on the final verdict.
